AXA Health Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay for the sessions or does AXA pay directly?

We invoice AXA Health directly for your authorised sessions once you provide us with your AXA details in the intake forms. You do not need to pay us upfront unless you have an excess on your policy (see below).

What is an "Excess" and do I have to pay it?

An excess is the contribution you agreed to pay towards your treatment when you took out your insurance policy. If you have an excess, AXA will notify you of this and will deduct this amount from what they pay us. You will need to pay this to us directly. We recommend checking with AXA if you have an excess before starting.

How many sessions does AXA cover?

Typically, AXA authorises an initial block of 10 to 20 sessions. If you and your psychologist agree that further treatment is needed, your psychologist can submit a progress report to AXA to request authorisation for additional sessions (further approval is dependent on the type of policy you have with them).

Do I need a GP referral?

AXA Health usually requires a GP referral before they authorise psychological treatment. We recommend calling them to check your specific policy requirements before booking your consultation with us.

Is online therapy covered by AXA?

Yes. AXA Health fully covers online video therapy with our HCPC-registered psychologists. The coverage and number of sessions are exactly the same as face-to-face appointments.

What happens if I miss a session?

Insurance providers, including AXA, do not cover fees for missed or late-cancelled sessions. If you need to cancel, please give us at least 48 hours' notice. Late cancellations or missed appointments will be invoiced to you directly at our standard self-funding rate.

What happens if AXA does not pay for my sessions?

If AXA does not cover part or all of your treatment (for example, if your policy has expired or your allowance has been used up), you will be responsible for paying these fees yourself. In this case, we will invoice you at our standard self-funding rate.
