Dr Marie Hillen Bech is a Counselling Psychologist and registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
Marie is committed to offering clients a real human relationship through which to explore their difficulties, make sense of their experience, and empower personal growth and healing. She offers evidence-based therapeutic practice with authenticity, creativity, and a sense of humour. She believes everybody can benefit from therapy - whether to address a specific problem or to explore and make sense of experiences, relationships, or facets of identity, and she is committed to her continued development as an integrative practitioner drawing from a range of approaches to offer her clients a tailored treatment plan that takes into account individual needs, goals, and preferences.
Following her undergraduate studies, Marie worked in the homelessness sector, supporting vulnerable adults in supported accommodation, before pursuing an MSc in Mental Health and Clinical Psychology. She subsequently went on to complete her professional doctorate in Counselling Psychology at City, St. George’s, University of London. During her doctoral training, she completed core training in humanistic, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic, and systemic approaches.
She has gained experience working with people with a variety of psychological and emotional difficulties and diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, complex trauma and PTSD, personality disorders, substance addiction, and psychosis, while working in a variety of services across the voluntary and private sectors as well as the NHS. She has specialist expertise in the treatment of eating disorders and disordered eating, body image difficulties, and trauma.
Marie appreciates the importance of the wider context and systems a person lives in and aims to offer a welcoming and safe therapeutic environment to people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. She recognises the importance of acknowledging and respecting difference and educates herself on issues relating to diversity and social justice.
In addition to her clinical work, she supervises doctoral research projects on the Counselling Psychology programme at City, St George’s, University of London.
