Dr Priti Surendran
Clinical Psychologist
Dr Priti Surendran is an HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with over 12 years of experience working across NHS mental health services in a range of settings, including inpatient services, residential care, community teams, and memory services. She has worked with individuals across the lifespan, from children and adolescents through to older adults, as well as individuals with learning disabilities, supporting people experiencing a broad range of psychological difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, obsessive-compulsive difficulties, panic, phobias, psychosis, and complex emotional needs.
She holds a BA in Psychology, an MSc in Applied Psychology from Middlesex University, London, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) from Royal Holloway, University of London.
Priti’s therapeutic approach is integrative, collaborative, and evidence-based. While Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) forms a core part of her practice, she also draws from approaches including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). Her work is additionally informed by narrative and systemic perspectives, recognising the importance of relationships, family dynamics, culture, and life experiences in shaping emotional wellbeing.
A central part of her work involves taking the time to understand each person within the context of their wider story, not just the difficulties bringing them to therapy, but also their relationships, support systems, identity, and lived experiences. She works in a formulation-led and transdiagnostic way, recognising that people rarely fit neatly into one label or therapeutic model. Her therapy is collaboratively tailored, based on what feels most helpful and meaningful to the individual sitting in front of her.
As a South Asian practitioner who moved from India to the UK over 20 years ago, Priti places strong emphasis on cultural context within therapy. She is particularly mindful of how culture, migration, family expectations, and experiences of belonging can influence mental health, help-seeking, and the way emotional distress is expressed. She has a particular interest in supporting individuals adjusting to life away from home. Rather than making assumptions about identity or culture, she approaches each person with curiosity, openness, and respect for their unique experience.
Clients often describe Priti as warm, genuine, and easy to talk to. She aims to create a therapeutic space that feels safe, non-judgemental, and collaborative, balancing professionalism with being human. She believes therapy works best when people feel truly listened to rather than simply “treated,” and where appropriate, she values the role of humour, transparency, and authenticity in helping clients feel at ease. Her hope is to help clients feel safe enough to explore difficult thoughts and emotions honestly, while feeling supported throughout the process.
